  • Very disappointing

Great period detail and wonderful cinematography. Everything else is pretty bad. Hartnet seems very miscast, Johansson is given very little to do and Swank seems to be from a different movie. Eckhart is solid but he pops in and out of the movie and he is generally very underwritten. The script as a whole makes little sense and the Black Dahlia case has only an outside connection to the central plot. It's just a big mess.
  • Dark and foreboding

David Fincher was originally supposed to direct this film, but backed out due to the subject matter being too dark. A story too dark for David Fincher?! It is a dark film and I think that's why it bombed. Sure the acting is questionable at times(I know it's neo-noir but come on). It's a difficult film to watch, there is no happy ending and the characters are depressing. If you enjoyed films like Seven, then you might enjoy this or not.
